Working Group to Reimagine Public Safety

Summary

In partnership with the Policing Project at New York University School of Law, The Justice Collaboratory organized the convening of two working groups of some of the country’s leading advocates and experts to discuss what a reimagined public safety system would look like.

Approach

The goal of the working groups was to discuss concrete steps that municipalities can take to respond more effectively to the comprehensive public safety needs of their communities.

The first convening, held in October of 2020, was attended by local and national activists and advocates, government officials, academics, and funders. The group discussed foundational shifts that must occur, and challenges to achieving a new vision of public safety.

A second convening was held in January of 2021 to solicit input on the same set of questions from policing agencies and their representing organizations.

Funding

The Working Group to Reimagine Public Safety was funded by the Joyce Foundation and the Stand Together Foundation.
