Stephane D. Andrade

Senior Research Associate

Stephane D. Andrade is a Postdoctoral Associate in the Department of Sociology at Yale University and the Urban Ethnography Project, directed by Elijah Anderson. He recently earned his Ph.D. in Sociology and African American Studies at Yale.

As an urban ethnographer and interdisciplinary scholar, he uses fieldwork, participatory action research (PAR), and other qualitative methods to examine how racialized and economically disadvantaged individuals/groups experience the complexities of contemporary urban poverty, and navigate concerns around their safety and well-being.

His research interests lie at the intersection of race, poverty, and masculinity; community-based organizations, reentry, social policy, and the criminal legal system; mental/physical health, and gun violence.

His current research focuses on the experiences of poor and formerly incarcerated Black men living in Connecticut. More specifically, his work examines their lives through the lens of fatherhood and child support enforcement in order to understand the multiple, and overlapping constraints these men confront as parents––navigating the causes and consequences of debt, surveillance, and neighborhood violence.

His work has been supported by the Urban Ethnography Project and the Institution for Social and Policy Studies at Yale University and has been featured on outlets such as Slate, and Black Perspectives.

Stephane, a Rhode Island native, is a first-generation college graduate and holds a B.A. in Sociology & Africana Studies from the University of Rhode Island.
